Amelia island is an island off the coast of North Florida, just 30 miles from Jacksonville. It has a fascinating history as the focal point of cooperation and conflict between Spain England, the United States and several, insurgent groups. Eight different flags have flown Over the Island.
It was also famous for being a “free state” accepting slaves during the Civil War and recruiting them for the Union Army.
